Transfusion Medicine Services (TMS) meets the ARCBS Statement of Strategic Intent through supporting optimal transfusion outcomes for patients by the promotion of safe and appropriate transfusion management and clinical practice through education, research and the provision of expert scientific advice in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
The team provides expertise and support for health professionals, around the clock, every day of the year.
TMS conducts external and internal education initiatives aimed at improving understanding of transfusion medicine, reduction of waste and better management of blood.
TMS team members liaise with hospitals and laboratories on a daily basis, providing advice on the safe and appropriate use blood products and components, correct use and handling of products, stock rotation and storage procedures. They also sit on hospital transfusion committees, Blood User Groups and IVIg User Groups and liaise with state health departments and the National Blood Authority.
Some team members work part-time with TMS, maintaining their practice in hospitals, ensuring a constant exchange of information and experience of important transfusion, clinical and product issues.
Within the organisation, TMS team members contribute valuable perspective and knowledge from their understanding of end-users in the clinical setting. TMS is actively involved in a number of projects including the COOEE study exploring the total cost of administering a blood product to a patient and the Bloodhound study that will help inform the minimal stock holdings required by hospitals to cover emergency use.
